The ignition of a standard German Honda mbx 80 is restricted. For instance, when you have a minimum 180° exhausttimed cylinder and you have a pipe, for example a tecno, then the engine will stutter around 8000 rpm. The ignition must have more pre ignition to go better and faster. You should always consider to change the original ignition baseplate to a 'fast' ignition baseplate. This will remove the stutter around 8000 rpm and should rev through 11000 rpm, depending on the cylinder and pipe.
Fast ignition plate
The fast ignition plate is for sale between 15-25 euro. I always use it with a honda nsr 50 (AC08) flywheel for slight better performance. But beware, this ignitionplate also has the fact that the engine will produce more heat, so leave out the plug in the cylinderhead, so more coolingwater can circulate.
The standard German honda mbx 80 cdi can be used, but you have to use a honda nsr 50 flywheel and this plate of course.
The baseplate gives very good results when using a bored 55mm cylinder with a exhausttiming around 180-185°, a standard honda mbx 80 GE3G exhaust and a honda nsr flywheel. The mbx can now easily have a 17-38 (36) gearing fitted and pull around 115-120 km/U with lots of torque. The advantage when using this setup is that you can use a small carburettor, like the standard 18mm or honda ns1 20mm or the dell'orto 21mm for mbx 50 (also known as the malossi).

CDI
There are a lot of cdi's available. Each one has slightly different performance. I personally never use the standard ignition, I always use an innerrotor.
Posh superbattle gold
The Japanese Posh superbattle gold cdi is used in Japan on the mini nsr and is also available for the ns1. Pricing is around 75-100 euro. Never used one, but my opinion is that a innerrotor is better, but indeed you have no electrics to charge the battery and to give lights...
Motoplat innerrotor
The motoplat was a very popular ignition in the nineties. I have two of them and have one installed on my road mbx (ledlights are connected to a battery). The motoplat is a good performer, my setup is a turbokit carr10 pipe in combination with a 0,8 mm squish o-ring cylinderhead, 192° tuned cylinder and 28mm carb. With this ignition I have no flat spots what so ever and it revs to 13500 rpm with a topspeed of 135-140 km/U. Sometimes you can find one secondhand, prices vary between 100-180 euro. But always be aware, there is no baseplate available for these ignitions, so you'll have to make one yourselves. The motoplat was also available for engines with the igniton on the right side of the engine. Simply turn around the ignition (the red coloured outside sits now on the inside). On the pic of the racer you can see that in Spain they used these ignitions alot. (here in combination with a dell'orto 31mm and tavi criterium pipe).
Hpi
The hpi is one of the most adapted innerrotors in the Benelux. Available for 190-220 euro, and has a specific baseplate for the honda mb/mtx/nsr/mbx engines. I think they are slightly better then the motoplats, but they are less reliable. I never had any problems with them, but then again, I only use them on my ns1 racer. These ignitions have a nice curve and can be updated with a two curve ignitionbox. Overall good ignition, good throttle reaction, good curve. A necessity when using the turbokit race pipe, or any other race pipe above 190°. The ignition brings your engine to life and opens a whole other spectre of what your engine is capable of. Where the standard ignition, even with fast baseplate and nsr flywheel limits the engine, this ignition will add extra performance to your bike. It also comes with a coil of 10w. You can hook it up to your battery, connect your battery with led lights. Then charge the battery with a batterycharger.
